EASY HEAT (™) ROOF LINE AND GUTTER ELECTRICAL HEAT TAPE De-ICING INSTALLATION I have been installing the EASY HEAT de-icing heat tape/cable since 2007. The EASY HEAT company gives a one year warranty but with my installation method I get five years and more (all are still working). The problems are many. If it is done too late in the year, the shingles are hard because of the cold. They need to be warmed before clips can be secured. The clips are small and the barbs are smaller, catching 1/16 of an inch of the shingle as it snags the underside. No matter how well the clip attaches, it isn't enough. Ice and snow both can wipe a clip away leaving wire to fold over onto itself, get too hot, burn and then short out. I have numerous techniques to secure the clips to the roof. The problem is not the cable or the thermostat. The problems are that the clips don't secure very well, and the installation is not done properly. There are also problems with unrolling the cable, laying it out, estimating lengths, and doubling up for gutter down spouts. I have these all worked out. My first installation, seven years ago, is still intact. One twist in the cable and it folds over on itself, gets too hot, melts and shorts out. If a clip pulls out the cable slips, folds over on itself, melts and shorts out. There is another system with clips that are screwed through the shingles into the roof. Very expensive clips and more expensive cable. The EASY HEAT system is good when clips are actually secured and the cable is not laid out loosely. To properly install the EASY HEAT system is $3 per lineal foot, labor and materials. Thermostat installation is $20. There is a formula for determining the length you need. Variables are the over-hang, the length of gutters, number of downspouts, and length of the roof itself. The overall length is about 3 to 5 times the length of the area to be covered. The total length required is the price per foot charge. A proper installation can't be done in one day, even a small job needs to have the important clips secured properly before installing all the cable.
